Team Orlando
Located within and around the Central Florida Research Park campus, Team Orlando is a unique collaborative alliance formed by US military simulation commands. Its mission is to research, develop, test, acquire and support training systems for all branches of the US armed forces, the Department of Defense and other agencies. Team Orlando is also supported by academic and industry leaders in the modeling and simulation, human performance and training sectors. MS&T provides an update.
Human Cognition and Performance
Cognitive research is making significant inroads into the understanding of how humans learn, develop skills and apply newly gained mental capabilities towards solving complex problems. Applying the findings of such research to develop improved training techniques is key to helping armed services personnel adapt faster to the ever-changing environment of non-traditional, or irregular, warfare. MS&T investigates.
Evolving Geo-Politics and Military Alliances: The Impact on Training & Education
Two geopolitical changes have greatly affected NATO since it was founded in 1949; the collapse of the Soviet Union, and the shift in the United States’ geopolitical focus from Europe to the Middle East and Central Asia in the wake of 9/11, pulling the Alliance in the same direction. Concurrently, UN peacekeeping operations have undergone significant changes in terms of scale, nature and number. MS&T looks at the impact on military training and education as a result.
Missile Defense Programs and Training
In the current global security environment, much attention is being paid to rogue regimes that pose serious missile threats to the democracies. MS&T takes a look at the US Missile Defense Agency and the technologies that have been developed to mitigate the threat. The discussion also includes the news that the Joint Warfighting Center (JWFC) at U.S. Joint Forces Command (USJFCOM) is partnering with the Joint Exercises and Training Directorate (J7) at U.S. Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM) to develop a program that consolidates integrated air and missile defense training solutions across all military services.
Italian Air Force and US Army/Air Force Integrate Training
Italian warfighters have for the first time participated in joint and coalition training at the US National Training Centre (NTC) and at the USAF's Green Flag West (GFW) at Nellis AFB. Italian Air Force participation included 10 AMX/A-1 close support aircraft and crews. MS&T provides a synopsis.
Training in the Bulgarian Air Force
Bulgaria, a NATO member since 2004, is facing a lot of challenges in pilot training now tasked to do more with less budget. A new fleet of Pilatus PC-9M turbo trainers and Bell 206B3 helicopters is being used to train new pilots destined then to convert to flying legacy combat platforms (Russian made aircraft) still in use such as the MiG-29, Su-25, Mi-17, Mi-24, and new Western aircraft introduced in recent years such as the C-27J Spartan, AS532 Cougar and AS 565 Panther . Another challenge is adopting NATO standards for interoperability and training. MS&T discovers the training challenges facing this new NATO member.
